How to Hang Curtains: A Complete and Step-by-Step Guide

Curtains & DraperyWe’ve all been there: you found that perfect addition to your home, you bring it back, excited to see your vision come to life… only to realize that you have no idea how to install the darn thing! This happens a lot. But just because you don’t know how to hang curtains doesn’t mean you can’t learn! Check out these curtain hanging tips below to becoming an installation expert in no time!

How to Hang Curtains in 5 Easy Steps

Curtains can be tricky. There’s often a lot of material you need to contend with. Also, precisely nailing (sometimes literally) the length they need to be hung from in order to achieve that perfect look also takes some planning.

If you’re totally in the dark when attempting the installation, this can seem daunting. And messing up could leave unsightly holes in your wall as you adjust.

But the good news is that it’s not as hard as it seems!

Step 1: Make Sure You Have the Right Tools and Materials

Doing a job right requires having the right tools for the job—hanging curtains is no different. This is a critical curtain hanging tip as, without the tools and materials, all other steps will be practically impossible. You’ll need:

  • The curtains (should go without saying)
  • Curtain rod and other installation materials
  • Ladder
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Brackets
  • Level
  • Safety gear
  • Wall anchors (if necessary)

It’s worth noting that your curtains may require more or less tools/materials, but the above represents a good overall checklist to consult before attempting an installation.

Step 2: Take Precise Measurements

Measure twice, cut once—the adage stays true here. You’ll need to make sure that your windows are the appropriate size for the curtains you bought (ideally, you’ve measured before you purchased your curtains).

When determining the length of the rod, you’ll want to measure the width of the window and add between eight and twelve inches for the rod. You’ll usually want to measure from about four to six inches above the window, with a minimum distance of about two inches needed between the top of the window and where you’ll place your rod.

Then all you need to do is measure down to the floor to determine how much curtain material you’ll need.

Step 3: Determine the Curtain Size and Style

Depending on the style you’re going for, this will determine what kind of curtains and how much of said curtains you’ll need. They can pool on the floor or not even cover the entire window—there are many options, with none being necessarily better than the other.

Determine how you want your curtains to look when installed, so you can then figure out how much material you’ll need.

Step 4: Install Brackets

Unless you’re using a tension rod, you’ll need to install brackets. With your measurements and desired looks determined, that will inform where you’ll install your bracket. As mentioned above, you’re likely going to install it about four to six inches above the rod. Remember that the higher you hang your curtains, the taller your ceilings will appear. Here’s where the level comes in, as you’ll want to make sure that the brackets are perfectly aligned.

Step 5: Hang Your Curtains on Your Rod

With everything secure and in place, you can now hang the curtains on the rod using the hooks, rings, pockets, grommets, or whatever attaching device they have. Secure the rod between the brackets and you should be all done!

How to Choose the Right Curtains for your Room

The fabric plays a huge role in determining how your curtains will look and feel in a room. It will also determine how much light is able to filter through. Want to be able to achieve total darkness (like in a bedroom), then you’ll want heavier and darker curtains. Want a constant stream of light? Lighter and thinner materials will serve best.

Next, consider the aesthetic elements. Do you want a single colour, or a patterned look? More muted colours, or do you want your curtains to be an accent piece of sorts and really spice up a room’s look? It’s totally up to you and is only limited by what you’re hoping to achieve with your curtain’s look.
