When it comes to curtains and drapery, they follow the same rule that applies to all interior décor decisions: there is no hard rule. That being said, there are tried and true methods for establishing an atmosphere, mood, and feel of a room. Room carpeting and curtains can play big roles in achieving that desired room feel, and how you choose to colour them can radically alter the mood that a room projects.
While we’ve established that everything doesn’t need to match, we will, however, discuss a few home décor tips that will help bring the room that you see in your mind to life.
Should Curtains Match Walls, Rugs, and/or Sofas?
When we talk about “matching,” it can mean a variety of specific design choices, so let’s break it down.
You’ll typically want your curtains and rugs to complement each other or play off one another. That can be achieved in a number of ways.
The first method of pairing them is likely obvious—through colours. That doesn’t mean they have to be the same colour, or even in the same colour family (although that is an option). You can choose complementary colours (hues on opposite ends of the colour wheel) that contrast nicely with one another. Purple and yellow, orange and blue, and green and red are all complementary colours that pair nicely.
Another option is to pair colours based on colour families. There are hundreds of different shades (blue has over 100 all by itself). As such, there are many, many combinations that you can fit together in order to create a room that is both diverse in colour but maintains a unified theme.
The usual rule of thumb, of course, is to stick to neutral colours like beige, grey, and brown for walls, as they pretty much pair well with anything. So, if you ever want to get a special accent piece, it won’t look oddly paired.
But again, rules are made to be broken!
Besides, colours aren’t the only way to pair your curtains, walls, rugs, and sofas…
How to Pair Curtains, Rugs, Walls, and Sofas with Textures
Textures are a great way to create a cohesive theme throughout your room.
Thick and heavy curtains, for instance, pair well with an equally thick rug. Conversely, lightweight and thin curtains will go nicely with a light carpet. You can also use a shaggy textured curtain and rug to tie a room together.
