Whether you’re looking for living room, bedroom, or family room blinds/shutters, you can judge the two option across a variety of criteria.
First, let’s tackle the main difference between shutters and blinds.
It all starts with how they’re fitted to the window.
Blinds are attached on the inside of or above the window recess, while shutters are attached to the window frame itself, creating a sturdier structure.
While the distinction may not seem all that significant by the above description, the two can actually leave a profoundly different imprint on a room. As such, it’s important that you take the time to carefully consider which of the two is the best fit for your home.
So, a big benefit is that if you look hard enough, you’ll likely find the right blinds for you.
And as they come in a variety of types, they also are made from a variety of materials. This lets them fit in wherever their placed, whether a living room with tons of sunlight or bedroom that doesn’t get a lot of sun exposure.
They also tend to be less expensive than shutters. So, if you’re constrained by a tight budget, then blinds may be the right option for you. Or at least a solid starting point.
The benefit of that approach is that they tend to last much longer than blinds. What’s more, they also tend to be more damage-resistant and easier overall to clean. They also won’t get tangled as some blinds are known to do, so you won’t find yourself having to deal with annoying knots.
The lack of a string or pulling mechanism means that shutters are also wonderful for children and pets. While corded blinds aren’t dangerous necessarily for kids or animals, there is the added risk of having long, thin, pliable string lying around. It’s not a difficult problem to fix if you have blinds, but with shutters, you won’t have to worry about them at all.
Shutters also offer excellent insulation, helping keep your rooms warm in colder months. There are blinds that can also act as insulators, but by and large, shutters are far better at insulating your home.
And in keeping with their durability and having fewer moving parts, overall, shutters are far easier to maintain than blinds. Even cleaning them is a cinch. Blinds, by contrast, tend to move around and bunch up when cleaning, whereas shutters are stationary and solid, making it an easier process.
Shutters also offer that classical look that goes with almost any home. While blinds can seem out of place in certain room aesthetics (like in more stately houses or rooms), shutters can pair well with almost any room out there. In other words, they tend to be more versatile.
And while they may not come in as many varieties as blinds, there’s still plenty of shutters out there to select from, including ones made from wood, PVC, and synthetic wood.
Now that we’ve broken down the two by their general features, it’s time to decide, once and for all, which window covering is superior…
Just kidding. At the end of the day, it very much depends on the person and the room. We didn’t even mention curtains, which can be another great alternative to blinds and shutters.
But ultimately, if price is your most important factor, then blinds are the way to go.
If, on the other hand, you’re keener on finding a timeless look to complement your room (you will, after all, have to stare at these window coverings every time you step in the room), then shutters may prove the better option.
What’s more, if you’re looking to have better insulation and control of how the sun filters through the window, then again, shutters are the way to go.
